Magician’s Apprentice Review – WARNING SPOILERS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last Saturday, September 19th, The Doctor and Clara returned to an amazing Season 9 opener!  In just 45 minutes, we witnessed intense action, plot lines, the return of Missy and amazing acting by Peter Capaldi, Michelle Gomez (who has become my favorite female actress) and Jenna Coleman.

The episode opened with a war scene on another planet, a scared and lost kid in the middle of a battlefield, freaky hand mines with eyeballs and of course the Doctor who was more than willing to save the kid – that is until he found out that the kid was Davros.  WOW – all in the first sequence of the episode.

Of course the Doctor does allow Davros to survive and now we basically have a decent idea of where Season 9 will or might be taking us.

After the opening scenes, Missy and Clara have a cool exchange that in my opinion really solidifies Michelle Gomez’s Missy character as being right up there with Roger Delgado.  We are also led to believe that the Doctor has fallen off the grid while this cool looking snake like creature named Colony Sarff is trying to track him down – going to the Shadow Proclamation and Karn – before ending up in the medieval times.  This brings us to the most awesome entrance ever for the Doctor and any Superhero in my opinion – The Doctor playing electric guitar on a tank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We then find the Doctor, Clara and Missy on Skaro where the Doctor has a creepy exchange with Davros that includes sound bites and screen shots of past encounters with previous regenerations of the Doctor and Davros.  At the end of the show, Clara and Missy and the Tardis (yes you read that correctly – the Tardis) are EXTERMINATED!!!

So what are my thoughts?

This opener was extremely fast paced but not so fast that you got lost in the plot.  Everything was put together smoothly and at the end, you were like “Holy Crap”!  The acting by Capaldi and Gomez were incredible and though I may get crucified for this next string of words, Coleman was actually left behind compared to them.  In fact, the episode would be just as good without her.  But needless to say, Coleman did do a good job playing the concerned friend/companion.

Also, there is a line that the Doctor says that has been making me think all week.  It happens at the very end and is how the episode finishes on a cliff hanger.  The Doctor essentially time travels back to the beginning where he let kid Davros live.  The last line the Doctor says is “I am going to save my friend the only way I can, Exterminate!”  So  - who is the Doctor’s friend?  The obvious answer is Clara but it could also be Missy.  It could also be the Tardis!  So who is the Doctor really trying to save?

Final Rating  - After watching Magician’s Apprentice for 4 times – A Perfect 10
